niibin 2011 Most of the summer was spent studying water quality issues along the St. Louis river watershed. Students traveled along the St. Louis river collecting water samples to test for oxygen, opacity, pollutants and insects to signify the health of the water sample. Considerable time was spent studying the affect of the mining proposed in northern Minnesota, as it relates to wild rice growth. See manoomin web site for more information. Research study within the manoomin projects (diatoms, macro fossils and phytoliths) continued as University professors from LacCore worked with students in the Natural Resources lab and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community labs using microscopes and sieving tools.
